Back in the early 1830s, orchard road was an unnamed road filled with plantations and farms for nutmeg, pepper, and orchard fruits, thus inheriting the name Orchard road. During the 1840s prior to what Orchard Road is now, a large Chinese graveyard appeared along the road and later a Jewish cemetery was built at where Ngee Ann City and Dhoby Ghaut Mrt Station stands now but was demolished in 1984. It was during 1958 where a local merchant C.K. Tang set up House of Tangs, now TANGS departmental stall, marking the first step of transformation into Singapore’s iconic shopping district. In the present day, Orchard road is now a retail and dining paradise, having more than 5,000 establishments providing the luxury lifestyle experience to tourists and locals.
